We’re really excited today because we ordered our first pig from Tom and Michele at Open Gate Farm. We use as much locally sourced produce as we can get our hands on, but this will be our first foray into locally, humanely raised meats.
Tom and Michele run an amazing farm. They use no feed hormones or antibiotics on their animals. They raise heritage breed pigs, which simply taste better than the commodity pigs more commonly available from your average grocery store. Here’s a great PDF with more information about heritage pigs, if you’d like to know more. They also raise chickens for eggs and meat, turkeys, ducks, and goats, and grow fruits and vegetables. They offer farm tours, so if you, your family, or even large group wants to learn about how farming *should* be done, call them to set up a visit. You won’t regret it!
Does it make a difference? Absolutely. The end product is delicious. We’ve tasted pork from previous Open Gate pigs and it’s easily the best we’ve ever had. We’ll be using it in some of our upcoming weekly specials, so keep an eye on our specials page (or the short version on the right side of every page on the website) for Open Gate items coming very soon. Also, if you love what we serve, you don’t have to wait until the next time we run it for more! You can buy individual cuts straight from the farm, just give Tom a call at 434-978-7446 and he can tell you what they have in stock.
We think Tom and Michele have a great thing going at Open Gate Farm. After tasting this pork, we think you’ll be a believer too. And if you’d like to learn more, order meat, or schedule a tour, check out their website. Don’t miss the update about their “Turken”!
